Depth 9 to 112; head 2 4/5 to 3; snout 234 to 3 in head from snout tip; eye 3 to 42, 11/5 to 13/5 in postorbital; interorbital 34 to 4 in head from snout tip. Gill rakers 7+17. Scales 53 to 55 in lateral line, 34 to 47 predorsal to occiput. Dorsal rays 14 or 15; anal 15 or 16; pectoral 11; ventral 6; caudal forked. Top of head and upper jaw with dusky. Body largely white, silvery lateral band edged blue gray above. Beak black, tip bright red. Dorsal and caudal dusky terminally. Length to 236 mm.

Depth 934 to 10; head 234 to 3 1/5; eye 4 in head, 11⁄2 in snout, 11⁄2 to 13 in postorbital. Scales 52 to 55 in lateral line. Dorsal rays 15 to 17; anal 18 to 20; pectoral 11 to 13; ventral 6. Back dark brown or olive. Sides with well defined silvery band, broader between dorsal and anal. Pectoral blackish. Reaches 407 mm.

Head 3; triangular part of upper jaw much broader than long; eye 11⁄2 in postorbital, equals interorbital. Scales 58 in lateral line. Dorsal and anal scaly. Dorsal rays 15; anal 15; caudal deeply forked. Back dark greenish. Sides with well defined silvery band, not quite wide as scale: Length not given.

Hong Kong. This species was separated from the East Indian Hemiramphus melanurus Valenciennes by Bleeker, chiefly by its few more scales in the lateral line, 58 as compared with 55. Likely the two forms may not be found to be different.

Pale gray. Side of head, iris and wide longitudinal band bright silvery white. Beak pale brown and uniform fins all paler. Reaches 178 mm.
